“I dwell in Possibility--”
Poem 466 by Emily Dickinson
Hello!
Whew! The summer has been one of glorious weather (unusually mild to my memory here in NC) and change. Both of my sweet sons started new adventures in August, and I spent the summer helping them prepare (or annoying them with questions at least!) and composing myself for the coming changes. My oldest boy---now 20--so I should say man---moved to Asheville, NC, and my youngest son---now 17---is spending his senior year of high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). Thus my husband and I are officially empty nesting a year early!
The summer was spent cleaning, culling, collecting, and packing while I savored the remaining time I had with both boys every day. My mind also excitedly contemplated the changes the boys being gone would bring. I mean, the laundry alone is a game changer (Even with them helping with laundry!) Food, too...you have no idea how much money we are saving in food! But honestly those changes are minor. My husband and I have each other all to ourselves, and my days are my own. The boys are very independent and responsible, so I didn’t have to mother them much. They cooked and cleaned for themselves when they were home, but I also set my schedule by them. Now I mother from afar---a text here or DM there, but we are definitely our own people now.
Of course I miss my boys. A book keeps me company at lunch now---and Charlie, too, but I am also enjoying the autonomy the changes have brought. I do look forward to fall break when I can jump into Sidney’s room while he is working at his computer, but my new, roomier nest is fun to lounge in so far! You could say I am “dwelling in possibility!”
As you can imagine my life/studio balance has been an intricate dance all summer, but I think I actually managed pretty well. The studio has been busy with custom quilts, pillows, classic t-shirt quilts, and cutting for new projects. I was wise enough to set aside enough time for a small vacation and the time for the moves for the boys...so I don’t feel stressed about my schedule!
I should note, though, that October is fast approaching, so if you want orders for Christmas, you might think about getting those in to me soon! My Christmas schedule is usually full by mid to late October, so keep that in mind in terms of your planning.
This summer also saw me featured in a VoyageRaleigh article. You can view it here: https://voyageraleigh.com/interview/meet-ginger-cherry-of-garner/ I discuss my evolution as a fiber artist and quilt maker! Please go check it out!
September means me getting my new schedule settled and more exciting projects in the studio! Stay tuned!
Sending Quilting Love,
Ginger
Coming Next Week: Hopefully a more consistent blog schedule! :)
I am Reading: I have spent the summer devouring historical mystery novels...Lady Darby Mysteries by Anna Lee Huber to be specific. I read all of them! I also finished The Soul of an Octopus and probably others I cannot now recall. I read an Agatha Christie novel...maybe two…this summer. I am currently trying to decide what to read next! What are you reading? Let me know in the comments!
